Devi Das Thakur, affectionately known as D.D. Thakur, was born on 9th December 1929 in the quaint village of Batroo, situated in the Tehsil Pogal Paristan (Ukhral) of District Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir. He was born into a Rajput family, and from a young age, it was evident that he possessed remarkable potential and determination that would lead him to achieve great heights in his career.

In his early life, D.D. Thakur faced various challenges typical of the times. The tumultuous period of the tribal invasion in 1947 swept through the region, disrupting the lives of many. Despite these hardships, Thakur's determination shone through as he embarked on a journey of around 120 kilometers on foot to reach his hometown of Batroo from Pratap College in Srinagar, where he was pursuing his second-year studies.

Following his graduation, he pursued a degree in economics and earned a diploma in public administration, making him the first and only graduate in Pogal Paristan in 1950. This achievement marked the beginning of an illustrious career dedicated to the service of the people and the land he held dear.

In 1951, D.D. Thakur took up the position of headmaster at Government High School, Pogal, where he exhibited a strong sense of responsibility towards education and its role in shaping a better society. It was during this period that fate intervened, bringing him in contact with Shadi Lal Kotwal, an esteemed advocate in Ramban. Recognizing Thakur's potential, Kotwal encouraged him to pursue higher education in the field of law. Despite financial constraints, Thakur's father, driven by unwavering faith in his son's abilities, managed to send him to Lucknow in 1952.

In Lucknow, D.D. Thakur's determination and dedication to his studies were unwavering. In 1954, he successfully completed his Bachelor of Law degree at Lucknow University, adding another feather to his cap and setting the stage for a remarkable career ahead.

Upon returning to his homeland, armed with a law degree, Thakur delved into the field of law and socio-economic development. His profound knowledge and passion for serving the community quickly earned him recognition and respect. He became known for his work in advocating land reforms and championing initiatives that uplifted the lives of the marginalized in Paristan, Pogal, and Guglidhaar.

As his reputation grew, so did his opportunities to serve the nation in different capacities. He held the esteemed position of a deputy chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, a testament to the trust and confidence placed in his leadership abilities. His legal acumen and commitment to justice led to appointments as a judge in both the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and later in the Supreme Court of India, where he contributed significantly to the country's legal system.

Thakur's illustrious career continued to ascend, and in 1990, he was appointed as the 17th Governor of Assam. In this role, he displayed exceptional administrative skills and a deep understanding of the diverse challenges faced by the state.
